Lumidla Caceva – Class of 2019

After graduating from Haut-Lac with excellent IB grades, Ludmila earned a First-Class Honours degree in Biochemistry from the University of Bath.

She also gained valuable research experience during a year-long placement in the Gurevich lab at Nestlé Health Science in Switzerland, where she helped develop a zebrafish model for studying type II diabetes. A project that enabled her to hone her skills in gene editing and confocal microscopy, as well as deepen her understanding of metabolic health.

Ludmila then pursued a Master’s in Clinical Nutrition and Obesity at UCL, and graduated with distinction. Recognised for her dedication to the field, she has now embarked on a PhD in cardiovascular health and diabetes at the Royal Veterinary College.

Her drive for excellence started at Haut-Lac, where she threw herself into both academics and extra-curricular activities. She was House Sports Captain, took part in Model United Nations conferences, joined the Environmental Committee, and completed the Duke of Edinburgh International Award.

She continued to lead at university, serving as treasurer of the Salsa Society and joining the rowing club. Her passion for salsa stayed strong during her Master's at UCL, where she even volunteered as an instructor.

Looking ahead, Ludmila is determined to make a real difference in nutrition and health. She wants to advance research in diabetes and obesity while working to reduce the stigma around obesity. With a deep passion for understanding how diet and lifestyle impact health at a molecular level, she’s set to make a lasting impact in her field.

Reflecting on her time at Haut-Lac, she says:

"My fondest memories are of outdoor sports and connecting with nature, whether it was on ski days, the Duke of Edinburgh International Award, or environmental committee activities. The international community, lifelong friendships and dedicated teachers shaped who I am today."

Her advice for current IB2 students is:

"Follow your passions and don’t let rejection from universities or companies discourage you. If something is right for you, it will work out. Leaving Haut-Lac and stepping into the unknown can be daunting, but it’s also an incredible chance to explore new interests and discover who you really are."
